Launching the Blog

Note: As part of my website redesign, I’m relaunching my personal blog. Since I’m deleting the old site, I’m salvaging some of the old posts and rereleasing them here. Enjoy!

Welcome to the launch of What’s the Story?. I’m excited by the premise of blogging on the topic of story. Personally, I love stories of all kinds. Stories bind teller and audience through an emotional exchange. Stories make us feel as well as think. Stories help us be more human.

I’ve been a fan of stories in many forms for decades. I was raised in a family of avid readers (yes, my nickname was “Worm”). Grandma reviewed children’s books, and my mother ran a used and new book store in Maine for many summers. I studied drama and plays—everything from Greek classics to current off-Broadway shows—and worked with theater companies for fifteen years. I’m a geek for movies from Hollywood’s Golden Age, although I should probably get out and watch more new releases. I watch my share of television, but I try to be discerning. Well, I try…

I left theater over a decade ago to pursue writing fiction. I’ve had two children’s plays commissioned and produced, and I’ve published two books: my debut romantic suspense, Lying Eyes, from Carina Press and my historical romance Ambersley.

I encounter story everywhere. From television commercials to Kathy Griffin’s stand-up comedy. From Shakespearean tragedy to NFL games. When I decided to launch this blog, I sat down and wrote a list of potential topics. The list is currently four pages long and growing.

I don’t plan to lecture, because I don’t consider myself an expert. I do plan to present a post each Monday and Thursday that hopefully will inspire some sharing of what people like about various stories or types of stories. Read About My Blog for more info about this blog, as well as guidelines for comments.

Glancing back up at this post, I see I’ve managed to talk mostly about myself.  I don’t intend to make a habit of that. In general, this blog is for bringing together a community of readers/movie goers/lovers of story and hear what you have to say about story.  Hope to see you Monday for topic #1:  Which is better, the book or the movie?
