Online Classes
Prose And Contests: Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Writing Contests But Were Afraid To Ask: Overwhelmed by the number of writing contests out there? Unsure whether to enter? Unclear about why you should enter? This 4-week online class is designed for unpublished writers seeking feedback and/or a chance to final in the hundreds of writing contests offered through RWA® chapters.
Contests offer opportunities for feedback from published authors, agents and editors. But contests also cost money and valuable writing time. This interactive lecture format will include handouts, examples and open Q&A to help writers understand what they can expect to gain from entering a contest. The class will provide an overview of the contest process, sources for researching contests, help writers identiy their motives for entering a contest, and even give tips on preparing your contest entry.
Coming Soon: Don't have time to take the class? Order the complete lecture packet. Check back for complete details or email me using the form on the Contact Page.
Live Workshops
Your Pitch Begins With YOU: Strengthening Your Pitch By Strengthening Your Presentation Skills Everybody out there wants to help you hone your pitch, but what about YOU and your ability to deliver it? Most writers dread face-to-face pitches with editors and agents because writers dread talking . Help yourself prepare physically and psychologically using the same techniques as performers preparing to face an audience. This workshop is designed to get attendees out of their writing chairs to walk the walk and talk the talk in an interactive Acting 101 style format. Leave your notebooks behind but wear comfortable clothes. (This workshop can run from 45-90 minutes as needed.)
Ready...Aim...Fire! Targeting Contests As Part Of Your Career Plan Based on the popular Prose and Contests online class (above), this live workshop is designed for beginning writers as well as writers of all levels with little contest experience. Using handouts and examples, the workshop helps attendees review their motives for entering a contest, helps them develop criteria for choosing which contests to enter, covers the basics of formatting an electronic entry, and gives an overview of contest rules, score sheets and general etiquette. (This workshop can run from 45-90 minutes as needed.)
Conceive...Believe...Achieve: Goal-Setting as a Proven Path from Abstract Wish to Concrete Plan Wishes. Dreams. They sound so much more interesting than the drudgery of actions and plans. But writing a novel doesn't just happen. And selling a book proposal isn't an accident. Achievements like these require planning and work. Dedication over time. Writers without a plan often lose track of their goals. In this live workshop, attendees start with the wishes and dreams--no matter how big or improbable--and use a systematic approach to uncover the necessary actions to make those dreams a reality.
